The Special Helper
Self-esteem building is a big part of the Kindergarten program, as is beginning to feel comfortable speaking in front of groups. In order to help meet these goals we will have a daily Special Helper in our class. The Special Helper will do small classroom tasks, such as helping lead the morning calendar activities and being the leader in the line when we go to the gym, music, computers or the library. The day that your child is the Special Helper will also be their day to show and share something that is special to him/her with the class.
Although the children love to bring toys for Show and Share, I like to encourage children to bring something that celebrates who they are rather than what they have, such as a trophy or a certificate they have earned, a picture that they have drawn, a photo of a special event such as a family outing or a birthday, a souvenir from a special vacation they went on, a favourite book, something that represents a club they belong to, etc.
You will know when it is your child’s turn to be the Special Helper, as I will send home a drawstring bag with your child. Please help your child choose something appropriate to place in the bag for Show and Share and support him/her with creating their clues for that item on the Mystery Bag sheet that will be sent home in the drawstring bag. It would also be beneficial to have them practice reading their mystery clues so that they feel confident to share them with their classmates. Please make sure that the bag comes back to school on the next school day so that we can ensure that everything is ready for the next child’s turn.
I will give lots of support and encouragement while they begin to take part in this activity as we realize that for many of the children this will be their first experience presenting in front of a group and that for others speaking English can be a challenge.
Thank you for your support with this learning activity.
