We Can Be Green...
We can do our part to show we care for our surrounding community and the environment.
Every choice that we make has an impact on our environment, which ultimately will affect our quality of life. Balancing our lives between our means and convenience is important, but we can also recognize the value in making careful decisions by weighing the impacts.
A couple of years ago James Kennedy committed to being green! Each class was given three recycling bins: green for organics, blue for recyclables and a very small black bin for waste. As a class we will discuss the importance of doing our part in taking care of the environment. One way we can start is to think about the way we pack our lunches. Did you know that if you use a disposable lunch, you create between 4–8 ounces of garbage everyday? That can add up to as much as 100 pounds per year! The children will all learn how to sort the waste from their lunches into the correct recycling bins, however, I encourage you to help your child pack a litter-less lunch. If your child does happen to bring snacks/lunch in disposable packaging, the packaging will be sent home in your child's lunch kit as we have very limited garbage space. Below are some ideas to help you out:
- Use a reusable water bottle instead of a juice box.
- Bring reusable plastic containers instead of Ziploc bags, foil or cling wrap.
- Fruits and vegetables have no disposable waste! We compost!
- If you do use a disposable plastic bag, wash it out and keep reusing it.
- Purchase your snacks in bulk size and repack into individual reusable containers.
